What Is a Hallmark?
A hallmark is a small stamp or laser engraving on a piece of gold jewellery that verifies its purity. It helps buyers identify genuine gold and protects them from purchasing under-purity or counterfeit jewellery.
How to Identify Hallmarked Gold Jewellery
1. Look for the BIS Hallmark Logo
The BIS logo is the first sign of certified gold jewellery. It indicates that the jewellery has been tested and certified according to BIS standards.
2. Check the Gold Purity
Hallmarked jewellery displays its purity in karats or fineness.
Examples:
- 24K (999) – 99.9% pure gold
- 22K (916) – 91.6% pure gold
- 18K (750) – 75% pure gold
- 14K (585) – 58.5% pure gold
3. Find the Hallmark Stamp
The hallmark is usually engraved on the inner side of rings, the clasp of chains, the back of pendants, or the inside of bangles and bracelets.
4. Verify the HUID Number
Modern BIS hallmarked jewellery includes a 6-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code. This unique number helps verify the authenticity of the jewellery.
